The variety of types and types of edged weapons, the specific design, shape, size and other characteristics of each of them require special knowledge in the field of their forensic evaluation. In many cases, these issues can be resolved through forensic examination of cold steel.
For decades, the problems of cold steel examination have been the focus of attention of forensic scientists, judicial and law enforcement officials. The expertise of cold weapons has taken a place in the judicial processes related to the use of weapons used to cause harm to health, acts of illegal acquisition or trade, export through customs of undeclared types thereof, etc.
Cold weapons are objects and devices, structurally designed and by their properties suitable for repeated infliction by direct impact of severe (life-threatening at the moment of infliction) and lethal bodily harm, which action is based on the use of human muscular force.
The analysis of the expert practice of the cold weapon expertise, Forensic methods of examination of cold weapons and structurally similar products and interviewing the practical employees of expert departments indicate that at the present stage there are significant problems of the expertise of cold weapons. Despite the significant step in the development of the expertise of the cold weapon connected with approval of the methods of forensic examination of the cold weapon and products structurally similar to it, the practice of its use showed that some provisions of the methods have significant drawbacks.
This article analyzes some of the methodological provisions of the examination of the cold steel arms and constructively similar to it items, identifies the problematic issues of the expertise of the cold steel arms and outlines proposals for their elimination.
